A New Way to Roll: Sushi on a Budget

If you’re anything like the rest of the Pepperdine student body, you may find yourself craving sushi on the regular. Yet with limited choices, given the fact Sushi Friday in the Caf happens only once a month, it is not hard to wonder why students are constantly looking for new places to find this beloved cuisine. Being in Malibu, students aren’t exactly given the most affordable options when it involves going out for a sushi dinner. Here are some options that will satisfy any sushi lover’s cravings without breaking the bank.

Bui Sushi (23733 Malibu Road, Malibu, CA)

Although the name and pricey menu of Bui Sushi may intimidate many when first mentioned, there are actually many affordable options for those looking for a quick sushi run. With a location that is nearby Pepperdine’s campus, Bui Sushi is always offering specials that involve amazing rolls for even better prices. On a typical day, most rolls at Bui Sushi are $15 or more. However, there are many that are only about $8 to $10, and worth every penny. If you ever find yourself needing to save a few bucks when on your next sushi date here, some great options include the Spicy Tuna Roll, the Salmon Roll and even the classic California Roll.

Hide Sushi (2040 Sawtelle Blvd., Los Angeles, CA)

Nestled along Sawtelle Blvd. is Hide Sushi, a traditional Japanese restaurant that is popular among many LA locals. The only problems you may find with this amazing spot is that it’s closed on Mondays and that some of their options are a little nontraditional compared to what some people may be used to. Besides this, though, Hide Sushi provides a bountiful array of sushi options that can range from the low price of $3 to the most expensive being about $12. Great options when going to Hide Sushi is the Tuna & Cucumber Roll, the Shrimp Roll and basically any of their super inexpensive lunch combo specials.

Sushi Stop (2222 Sawtelle Blvd., Los Angeles, CA )

If you’re looking for an ultra-cheap sushi dinner that is equally as amazing as the amount of money you’ll be saving, then Sushi Stop is here to answer your sushi prayers. Every single meal is at a fixed price of $2.75. Yes, you read that right. $2.75. Each plate is fairly small, though, so you may need to get multiple orders if you’re feeling pretty hungry when you go. Located again along Sawtelle Blvd., this restaurant is always filled with people waiting to get a mouthwatering sushi dinner at an unbeatable price. If you haven’t tried Sushi Stop, you seriously need to. For some yummy options, the Creamy Shrimp Roll is a favorite for many, along with the Salmon Roll and the Lobster Roll.

So if you’re feeling an extreme sushi craving hitting you soon, find your way over to these spots that are favorites among any sushi lover. With no need to feel guilty over the price that won’t be hitting you as it does at most sushi restaurants, you might as well order two rolls and even dessert.
