These tasty treats aren’t only delicious, but also good for you! The following five foods are more than just scrumptious snacks; they are essential to your health and wellness.
These fab five foods are underrated…
1. Salmon
Sometimes referred to as the “world’s healthiest food” the benefits of salmon are endless. The high protein content and amino acids found in salmon are terrific for overall health. Plus, salmon serves as a brain food; so when it’s time to hit the books, consider indulging for a fulfilling meal. Don’t fear the fat content! Even though salmon is considered a fattier fish, it is also a weight loss food. According to BBCgoodfood.com, salmon is a source of high-quality protein, but the omega-3 fatty acids are also good for you. These fats are essential to healthy brain function.
2. Protein
Pack in the protein! Meats, dairy products and eggs are all great ways to reach your protein needs. Authoritynutrition.com estimates you need 46-56 grams of protein per day. High protein foods are also great for weight loss. They provide a filling meal with little to no sugar or carbohydrates.
Vegetarian or vegan? Not to worry! Whey protein shakes and protein bars can function as substitutes, but be sure to look out for the sugar content and carbohydrates found in these products. Try to stay away from anything high in sugar or artificial sweeteners.
3. Avocado
Bring on the guac! Avocado is not only a delicious treat, but extremely healthy. According to WebMD.com, avocados offer nearly 20 vitamins and minerals in every serving. They are a great source of vitamin B and are also high in potassium. While avocados are high in monounsaturated fat, this healthy fat is vital to your body’s health. Avocados are also a great source of fiber and help you stay full longer.
4. Egg Whites
What came first, the chicken or the egg? Egg whites are the only pure protein food. Not only do they leave you feeling full, but they are low-calorie and fat free. They’re also lactose free, cholesterol free and gluten free — aka they can accommodate almost any diet.
5. Greens (by any means)
You can never overestimate the power of veggies! Kale, spinach, broccoli and cucumber — you name it! In any manner, shape or form, veggies are the best! Not only are they an extremely low-calorie food, they are packed with essential vitamins and nutrients. They’re also a terrific source of fiber and are crucial for healthy digestion.
