Pepperdine is no longer affiliated with the Hertz car-sharing program.
Pepperdine has discontinued the Hertz car-sharing service on campus due to Hertz no longer being allied with universities across the United States, according to Deputy Director of Department of Public Safety Dawn Emrich.
Students will now be required to use the ZipCar car-sharing service provided by the university if they wish to rent a car on campus.
“Hertz was too messy and unorganized,” junior Brittni Moore said. “I think because they were a part of such a larger organization, it was hard for them to focus on the needs of us Pepperdine students.”
ZipCars are located on campus in Rho parking lot. The new program launched today with an ice cream and information party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Joslyn Plaza.
“The system has been vetted by the General Counsel and Insurance and Risk Director,” Emrich said.
But some students are still wary.
“I wouldn’t use them because I am scared of driving here [in LA.],” freshman Maude Shephard said.
The change in car-sharing service will not have an effect on tuition for current students, according to Emrich.
ZipCar is charging students $25 to sign up for the program. The charge includes gas, mileage and insurance for each use of a vehicle.
“It (Hertz) offered an alternative to students without a car to get off campus. The schedule for renting the car was shifty — people [were] not bringing the car back on time, so you would miss your car window,”Moore said.
“I did think it was a fair price for an hour or two, but anything longer than that resulted in unfair charges for the time being. And being in LA., it was very easy to be off campus for longer than two hours.”
