Pepperdine Women’s Soccer took a trip to Massachusetts and faced undefeated Harvard University on Sept. 9 in a non-conference game.
The Waves entered the game coming off of a successful stretch, including a win over No. 3 UCLA and No. 23 Georgetown. Following the win over UCLA, the Waves were honored with multiple WCC weekly awards.
The matchup broke even on multiple categories, with both Pepperdine and Harvard having six shots on goal, five saves and three offsides. Harvard won seven corner kicks compared to Pepperdine’s six.
Pepperdine showed the first signs of promise with a shot on goal within the first five minutes of the match, but the game remained a stalemate until the last 15 minutes.
Graduate student defender/forward Megan Edelman’s foul resulted in a penalty for Harvard, capitalizing with the first goal of the game in the 77th minute. Pepperdine had less than 15 minutes to score and showed promising signs on attack, winning multiple corner kicks.
Edelman redeemed herself with an attempt from outside the box that landed in the back of the net in the 81st minute, tying the game up for the Waves. Edelman’s goal was her first of the season and helped push Pepperdine to their fourth consecutive game without a loss.
Edelman’s goal was the first goal Harvard has allowed this season, marking the third consecutive game where the Waves have scored the first goal on an opposing team this season.
This past weekend’s tie was just the second time both teams had faced each other in their history, according to Pepperdine Athletics, with the first in 2023 also resulting in a draw. The Waves followed up the draw with Harvard with a dominant 5-0 win against Fresno State on Sept. 20, and now move to 5-2-2– on the season.
The Waves next game is a home match Sept. 22 against Cornell University at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.
