Women's Basketball: Waves clip Eagles

November 12, 2009 by Pepperdine Graphic

The women’s basketball team had no problem notching another victory in their second home exhibition game against Cal State L.A. on Nov. 6.

The Wave’s rolled over the Eagle’s by more than 50 points winning 108-52.

According to head coach Julie Rousseau the Eagles played hard but the visitors’ 45 turnovers and 29 steals forced by Pepperdine made the game an easy win for the Waves.

“I thought they played hard and did a great job Rousseau said. Our team was more disciplined than last week and made improvements on the defensive end. It’s one game at a time and now it’s time to prepare for Northern Arizona next week.”

Although the first half was slow with 29 Eagle turnovers to the Waves’ 10 Pepperdine grabbed a quick lead with an 18-3 scoring run.  Sophomore guards Katie Menton and Jazmine Jackson were the leading scorers for the game with 18 points each.  Six of Menton’s points came during this scoring run.

The Waves’ cooled off after that but only for a short time.  Senior center Miranda Ayim sparked a 27-2 scoring run after two free-throws with 6:56 on the clock and the Waves comfortably ahead at 47-10.

Back and forth scoring for the remaining minutes put the Waves up by 38 with a score of 62-26 when the halftime buzzer   sounded.

At the start of the second half Menton continued to prove herself from beyond the arc     shooting two back-to-back three pointers right off the bat.  Her sixth three-pointer of the game shot at 16:05 put the Waves up 74-29.  Junior guard Joy Lelo and freshman guard Shay Cooney-Williams played off this momentum and continued to score in the next possessions increasing the Waves’ lead to 80-34.

Red shirt freshman Audrey Miller made her Pepperdine debut in this game against Cal State L.A.  After sitting out her freshman season due to injury Miller stepped it up in this game to score the Wave’s 100th game point from beyond the arc with 3:31 left.

“It felt really good to just be out on the court Miller said in an interview with Pepperdine Sports.  It’s just been such a long time it felt good to be out there.”

The final buzzer sounded with the Waves up 108-52.

Miller and the rest of the team agree that fan support will the crucial for the season.

“You guys all need to come out and watch us she told Pepperdine Sports. It’s going to be another great game and we need your support.”
