Women golfers struggle in Vegas

The Pepperdine women’s golf team completed its fall season this week with a seventh place finish at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. The Waves haven’t had quite the success that was anticipated at the beginning of the year, but still have the bulk of their schedule remaining in the spring semester to look forward to.

The women finished at 23-over par 887, which was 29 shots behind the University of Denver, who won the event with a three day total of 6-under par 858. The tournament had a strong field that included Oklahoma State University, University of Tennessee and the University of Arizona.

“We struggled all semester and we know what we have to work on now,” senior co-captain Leanne Bowditch said. “We can look back on it and take the positive things to next semester.”

Freshman Taylore Karle led Pepperdine by firing a total of 3-over par, which was resulted in a tie for 11th place finish followed by Bowditch who finished tied for 26th place at 7-over par.

Senior Stephanie Gelleni posted 8-over par to finish tied for 31st and junior Jayvie Agojo tied for 35th at 9-over par. Junior Nicole Montgomery rounded out the Waves scoring finishing tied for 46th at 11-over par.

Karle has been the most consistent player for the Waves all season and once again was the top finisher for Pepperdine. She fired rounds of 72-73-74 on her way to her 11th place finish. She said her first semester as a college golfer hasn’t been as successful as she would have liked and is going to work hard in her preparation for next semester.

“I definitely have room to improve,” Karle said. “I’m going to go 150 percent in the offseason as far as working on my game, working out, and schoolwork.”

The team is looking to the spring season which starts in February at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif. The spring semester also includes the WCC Championships, NCAA Regional Championships and the NCAA Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.

Karle said the team is confident they can improve in the spring and accomplish their goal of winning the national championship.

“We’re going to bloom at the right time,” she said.
