LMU shocks the No.1 ranked Zags
In a wild night in the WCC, the Loyola Marymount University men’s basketball team shocked Gonzaga, the four-time defending West Coast Conference champions, 80-74 Saturday night in Gersten Pavilion in front of 2,501 fans. It was the first league loss of the year for the Bulldogs (17-6, 8-1 WCC), as sophomore Andy Osborn had a game-high 17 points, including four three-pointers for the Lions (9-15, 3-6 WCC).
The last time the Lions knocked off Gonzaga was Feb. 2, 1996, 83-69, also at home. The win for LMU snaps Gonzaga’s nine-game winning streak on the season, a 16-game winning stint against the Lions and a 22-game streak in conference play.
Osborn led four Lions in double figures, as Sherman Gay added 14 points, while Wes Wardrop and Charles Brown added 11 each. Gay also had a game-high nine rebounds as the Lions out-rebounded the league’s leader on the boards, 29-24.
Gonzaga was led by guard Blake Stepp with 16 points, which included four three pointers.
