West Coast Conference Briefs

January 23, 2003 by Pepperdine Graphic

Gonzaga remains undefeated in WCC

The Gonzaga men’s basketball team improved its conference record to 4-0 with a 66-56 victory over the Dons of San Francisco.  Kyle Bankhead connected on 7 of 11 shots from behind the three-point arc, including three late three’s, that sparked a 19-4 Bulldog run to finish out the game.

Blake Stepp added 14 points in helping Gonzaga (13-5) to its fifth straight victory, and 11th straight in the WCC. Its last lost was against Pepperdine back on Jan. 18, 2002, in Malibu.

Portland junior takes WCC honors again

Portland junior forward Khalila O’Rielly-Williams went home with WCC Player of the Week honors for the second time this season.

O’Rielly-Williams led the Pilots to their first two conference wins last week, registering victories over St. Mary’s (84-77) and USF (73-59). Against the Gaels, O’Rielly-Williams connected on 11-of-18 shots from the field for a game-high 23 points. She also grabbed seven rebounds and registered four steals in the game. The wins pushed Portland to 2-2 in WCC play.

The Seattle native continued her impressive all-around play versus the visiting USF Lady Dons, scoring a team-high 19 points, hauling down a career-high 14 rebounds, handing out five assists and registering four more steals.

The talented Pilot will take her dominating game to Gonzaga this weekend as her team looks to jump up in the conference standings.
