Stepp named WCC Player of the Week

Gonzaga University guard Blake Stepp was named the men’s West Coast Conference Player of the Week for helping the Bulldogs to a sweep of their WCC openers last week over Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine.

The junior from Eugene, Ore., scored 21 points and handed out nine assists against LMU, then scored 16 points and had another 10 assists in Sunday’s showdown with pre-season co-favorite Pepperdine.

Stepp connected on 13-of-26 shots from the field, including 8-of-17 from three-point range. He also had a pair of steals, and committed only two turnovers in 74 minutes during the two games.

The Bulldogs topped LMU 85-73 and Pepperdine 92-72 to open WCC play 2-0 for the seventh straight season.

LMU women off to hot start in WCC

After dropping their final non-conference game, 51-61, at UNLV; the Loyola Marymount Lady Lions kept their unbeaten home streak in tact at 8-0 opening West Coast Conference action with wins against Portland (78-57) and Gonzaga (58-42) last weekend.

Senior Claudine Auld led LMU’s scoring efforts in both contests, and scored a career-high 26 points in registering her second career double-double with 11 rebounds against the Pilots Jan. 10 .
