Waves tennis takes to the courts

September 10, 2009 by Pepperdine Graphic

The men’s tennis team has high hopes this year after coming off of an impressive 2008-2009 season. The team had numerous accomplishments this past year specifically senior Bassam Bedias and then-senior Omar Altman who became NCAA All-Americans in both singles and doubles. The Waves also have two nationally ranked players according to the Campbell/ITA National Pre-Season Div. I Rankings released Sept. 4 2009. Bedias is ranked No. 21 overall in men’s singles and sophomore Alex Llompart is ranked No. 71 in men’s singles. The duo ranked No. 23 overall in men’s doubles.

They have appeared to start this season off right with seven of the men’s players and four of the women’s players attending The Open Championship tournament Sept. 5 through 7 held at the Russ-Alfaro Tennis Academy at the Sunset Hills Country Club located in Thousand Oaks.

All of the Waves placed well leaving much anticipation for the season. Sophomore Daniel Moss advanced all the way to the round of 16 before being defeated by Pepperdine alum and All-American Andre Begemann 6-1 6-4.  Moss also played in the men’s doubles where he and Stuart Keplar also advanced to the top 16 but lost in a very close match 6-4 6-2.

Freshman Finn Tearney advanced to the round of 32 where he lost 7-6 6-4.

Sophomores Hugh Clarke Jenson Turner and Alex Llompart made it the top 32 the quarterfinals and round 16 respectively in singles but all were forced to retire due to injury. Llompart and Tearney seemed to bounce back in men’s doubles  where they made it to the quarterfinals but were defeated due to Llompart’s injury.

Two notable Pepperdine alumni also participated in the tournament. Two-time All-American Calle Hansen advanced all the way to the finals but lost 6-1 6-3. Three-time All-American Andre Begemann advanced to the semi-finals in men’s singles but lost 6-0 6-4. He came back to win the men’s doubles title with partner Scott Doerner 4-6 7-6 10-5.

On the women’s side the team is eager to build upon a great 2008-2009 season and make the upcoming one even better. Last season the women’s team captured the 2009 WCC Conference Championship and earned a berth to the NCAA Championships. Members from the women’s team also competed in The Open Championship most notably junior Anamika Bhargava who advanced to the finals but was defeated 7-6 6-2. Sophomore Andrea Oates went all the way to the semi-finals but lost to fellow team member Anamika Bhargava in a very competitive match 6-4 6-4.

Both teams get ready to kick off their preseason with a tournament Sept. 18 at the Midland Invitational in Midland Texas.
