Waves struggle in Riverside

October 6, 2005 by Pepperdine Graphic

Staff Writer

In a rough weekend for the cross country teams at the Orange Groves race course in Riverside, a few individual performances stood out.

Junior Kyla Maher finished highest for the women’s squad, finishing 39th with a time of 19:17 on a five-kilometer course. Junior Tarrah Crowley also placed high, finishing five spots and a few seconds behind Maher.

For the men’s squad, sophomore Sam Hudson finished highest for the Waves at 47th, with a time of 27:02 on an eight-kilometer course.

The teams as a whole didn’t fare as well. The men’s team finished 10th as a team. The women’s team fared a little better, placing 11th in a field of 14 teams.

Hudson said the team hoped to fare a little better but were without an important part of the team for the meet.

“The team was disappointed with this past weekend,” Hudson said. “We ran without our captain and number one runner, Chad Trammell, and it showed in our performance as a team and as individuals.”

Trammell, a senior, ran at a different meet as an individual.

Cal Poly finished first as a team in the men’s dash with an average time of 25:11. The only West Coast Conference competition in the race were the University of San Diego Toreros, who beat Pepperdine by a few points.

Hudson said the team was disappointed about getting beaten by teams they’ve beaten before.

“San Diego and Northridge both finished ahead of us,” Hudson said. “But we have beaten both of those teams in the past. Hopefully at the next meet we can put it all together and gather some momentum going into conference.”

Team highlights in the women’s competition include Cal State Fullerton finishing first.  The Toreros finished behind the Waves in the race, as Pepperdine defeated a division foe.

The squads hope to rebound with some extended time to prepare for the next race, which will be a week from Saturday in San Luis Obispo.
