Waves' D Stifles Toreros

February 19, 2009 by Pepperdine Graphic

For the third consecutive game the Pepperdine’s men’s basketball team has captured a conference victory. Last Saturday night the Waves took on the Toreros of the University of San Diego and came away with a 57-52 victory. Slow Starts Continue for Pepperdine

Pepperdine has continued to struggle in the early minutes of recent games. Once again versus USD the Waves started out slow trailing 10-2 just four minutes into the game. Pepperdine would bounce back though and take the lead at half 30-28. The Waves continued to find success in the second half and their defense was overwhelming to the Toreros. San Diego would never regain the lead and the Waves would capture their fifth victory in conference play.

Too Hot too Handle

Freshman guard Keion Bell continues to be the go to man for Pepperdine and has recently received attention across the conference. Bell was named West Coast Conference player of the week in large part to his 18 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday. This is the first time a player from Pepperdine has received the award since Chase Griffin in 2007.

Asbury Regime Improves Conference Mark Already

With the victory Pepperdine is now 5-5 in the West Coast Conference. Their fifth win passes last year’s conference mark of four victories. With four games left on the season Coach Asbury and the Waves will look to extend that mark.

Road Trip

Up next the Waves will hit the road to take on Portland and Gonzaga. Pepperdine lost both games against these teams earlier in the year. Gonzaga is currently ranked No.-17 in the country by USA Today. Both teams have winning records in conference this season with Gonzaga being ranked 1st in conference and Portland ranked third.
