Alpha Phi event aims to lift students' hearts raise funds for others'

February 11, 2010 by Pepperdine Graphic

The sorority of Alpha Phi got together Wednesday night to do what they could for the fight against cardiac illness through their annual philanthropic event “Eat Your Heart Out.”

The Alpha Phis served dinner to more than 400 other Pepperdine students in the Waves Café at an event that raised thousands of dollars for the Alpha Phi Foundation which benefits cardiac care according to Philanthropy Chair Ashley Pabrazinsky a junior.

Members also announced the winners of the pre-event raffle sold T-shirts and held an auction of good and Greeks.

Audience members— mostly groups of fraternity or sorority members— bid on dates with other Greeks. Two members of each fraternity or sorority except Alpha Phi were auctioned off along with a coupon to a local restaurant. The winners could go on one date with their “prize” to that restaurant. Each class of Alpha Phis also put together a basket that was auctioned off to the highest bidder. The baskets included  movie tickets and gift cards to Malibu hotspots like Lily’s or Marmalade Cafe.

Also one member of each sorority represented her group in an eating contest and the fraternities performed skits.

The event was all fun and games but the hosts said the cause  was incredibly serious.

“It’s important to raise awareness so that women can be able to take care of themselves said Alpha Phi Dominique Benns, a junior. This is the leading cause of death for women in America.”

Students said they were big fans of the event organized by Alpha Phi’s vice president of marketing senior Stacy Konier and Pabrazinsky.

“I love Pepperdine for things like this said Ricky Villarreal, a sophomore who attended the event. It’s all for a good cause but at the same time it’s fun and the students really gather in support.”
