Junior Eileen Vargas stands at the top of the leader board after the third round of the 2006 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships that opened Tuesday at the par-72, 6,203-yard Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio.

At the end of the third round, Vargas stood at 214, two strokes under par. After rounds of 68 and 71, the Colombian national stumbled a bit in the third round, finishing with a 75 as she bogeyed five of the first 10 holes. Her lead over a field of four second-place contenders is three strokes going into today’s final round.

After the third day of competition, the Duke Blue Devils, looking for their fourth national title, opened up a 13-stroke lead over second place USC by the end of the third round.  Pepperdine’s overall team score of 894 puts it in third place.

Pepperdine, attempting to win its first national title, qualified for its seventh NCAA Championships in eight years after finishing third at the NCAA Central Regional Championships at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas. The Waves’ third-place finish was the second-highest in school history.

The championship tournament concludes Friday.
