Valentine's Day changes color

February 11, 2010 by Pepperdine Graphic

With floods of bright pink and red decorations plastering store walls we all know it’s that time of year again. With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching finding new and creative ways to celebrate this special day can be a challenge whether you’re dating someone or just want to do something nice for the special people in your life. That being said I challenge you to consider a new color this Valentine’s Day— green. Hey it’s about time for a change in color scheme don’t you think?

Whether you’ve hopped on the eco-friendly train or not there are some fun and interesting ways you can make this upcoming holiday more sustainable. Simply buying organic or locally grown flowers can turn a bouquet into an act of love with an “eco” twist. Or cut down your gas mileage by buying roses or carnations from Project L.E.A.D. this coming week in the Caf. Instead of buying that generic box of chocolates buy organic fair-trade chocolate this year. It’ll beat those chalky conversation hearts any day.

Letting those Valentine cards do the talking for you? Try buying a card made from recycled paper. The person receiving it will appreciate it as will Mother Earth.

If you’re going fancier with a romantic dinner this year be sure to make a reservation at a restaurant that’s local or specializes in organic or locally grown food. Not only will you cut down on your travel distance but your food’s journey as well. If you’re planning on cooking the meal yourself try shopping for your ingredients at a local farmer’s market or buying organic. Nothing will taste better than a romantic meal made with the freshest of ingredients to share with the one you love.

If all else fails no one can resist the appeal of a handmade gift. Skip all the excess packaging and create something unique for the people in your life. Not only will it make your gift especially personal it will also make it a one-of-a-kind labor of love.
