The Pepperdine women’s soccer team tied the University of Utah Friday, 2-2, in a well-played effort at Tari Frahm Rokus Field in Malibu.
The Waves (1-4-3) got on the board first when freshman forward Sage Coralli passed the ball to junior forward Amanda Rupp, who scored for a 1-0 lead and her second goal of the season.
Later in the period, Ute forward Adele Letro evened up the score, despite what appeared to be a missed offside call against Utah.
Pepperdine went back up on top in the second half. In the 69th minute, Waves’ junior forward Courtney Price smashed the ball into the goal from about five feet outside the box to put her team ahead 2-1. This goal was her third of the season to lead the team.
Less than ten minutes later, forward Letro was awarded a controversial penalty kick, and knocked the ball past Pepperdine goalkeeper Kayla Stolte for the equalizing point. This score would hold up throughout the remainder of the second half and two overtime periods to give Pepperdine its second tie in a row.
“I thought it was a little unfortunate that the game was decided on the P.K. [penalty kick],” said Waves’ Head Coach Tim Ward, “It was sort of a weird call.”
Stolte felt that both teams played very well and the match could have gone either way.
“It was kind of rough,” she said. “We deserved to win that game. We definitely had our chances, [and] they had theirs. They were a really good team consistently. It was unfortunate that we didn’t win, but a tie’s better than a loss.”
Sophomore forward Sophia Medina was satisfied with the team’s effort versus the University of Utah.
“It was a good game, we both had our chances and everything,” she said. “I think we’re the better team…we did good overall.”
The season keeps on rolling Sunday when the Waves host Cal State Northridge for a 1 p.m. match-up.
