More fallout from Vance Walberg’s resignation occurred earlier this week. Freshmen Daniel Johnson and Gus Clardy decided to leave the team, according to Athletic Director John Watson. Clardy, a walk-on from Texas, left the team to focus on his studies at Pepperdine.
Johnson left Malibu altogether, leaving school and heading back to his native Australia. He was a talented prospect for the Waves via the Australian Sports Institute, where many college freshmen are making headlines in the United States.
“Daniel has decided to try and play professionally in Australia,” Watson said Wednesday. “It was his own decision and I wish him the best.”
Four players have left the team since Walberg’s departure Jan. 17. His son, Jason, and senior Jarrad Henry left the team more than a week ago.
Watson also acknowledged the team’s top two recruits, Brad Tinsley and Paul McCoy, have been released of their letters of intent. Other schools are now eligible to sign both players, but Watson stated the team will “pursue them of course.”
