Pepperdine’s campus has been featured on the big screen and on the small screen, but for Pepperdine’s next appearence, students will have to look at the top half of the screen.

The national TV Guide Channel program “Campus Pulse” is being filmed every Wednesday at the fountain in Joslyn Plaza. The newest two-minute episodes air Thursdays at 9:57 p.m. Tonight, the third installment of the show will debut on Channel 99, Charter Cable in Malibu.

“We ask students on campus what is the last movie they have seen or are looking forward to seeing, what music they are listening to and what TV shows they are watching,” Eddie Delbridge, director of Live Events and Program Promotions at TV Guide Channel, said.

“We think they are really in touch when it comes to fresh, young perspective.”

The show is hosted each week by a different Pepperdine student.

The host interviews 10 students asking them about their entertainment tastes, and about six make the final version that is aired.

Sophomore Ashleigh Powalski was the show’s first host. She helped Delbridge work with Pepperdine, and put him in touch with the broadcast journalism department.

“It’s a way for us to understand pop culture through the students,” Delbridge said.

The show was created not only so TV Guide viewers know about new music, movies and TV shows, but also to involve a younger demographic, said Darren Sirkin, production assistant at TV Guide Channel.

Sirkin said that this is a good opportunity for college students because it gives them experience with national media.

“When I was in college, I didn’t have a chance to do or see anything real, that really ended up being aired,” Sirkin said.

Powalski agreed.

“It was an amazing experience to be able to do some real work on campus,” Powalski said. “It’s not something the university offers. It’s kind of neat to have an actual production company to come on campus and offer this to the students.”

“Campus Pulse” will continue to film at Pepperdine through the semester. While Pepperdine is the only campus that is on the show, the channel is open to other schools, Delbridge said.

Pepperdine was chosen because of its beautiful location and because Delbridge is an alumni, graduating from Seaver College in 1990, he said.

So far, “Campus Pulse” has been well received by the TV Guide Channel.

“Everybody at TV Guide loves [Pepperdine students],” Delbridge said.

“They say, ‘They are so smart and good looking.’”

Broadcast majors have priority to be show hosts, but any students can be interviewed for the show. “Campus Pulse” is filmed Wednesdays at 11 a.m. at the fountain.
