Track team stumbles at USC

March 26, 2009 by Pepperdine Graphic

The Pepperdine track and field team broke its 10th record of the season Saturday at the USC Trojan Invitational. Sophomores Bridgette Walker Amanda Ajdari and Brittany Clark and freshman Rebecca Clark ran on the 4×100-meter relay team that set a new record of 49.33.

She said the relay team has high hopes for what they can accomplish during the rest of the season.

“We want to keep breaking records Walker said.

Head Coach Robert Radnoti said he was pleased with his team’s performance, although the men’s and women’s track teams did not place in the meet against several national powerhouse opponents, including Texas A&M, Washington State and Fresno State.

The two teams are only in their fourth year as a program, with 12 male runners and 26 female runners. These numbers are even lower this season, since multiple athletes are injured.

Most of the team are freshmen and sophomores and we’re still growing said Head Coach Robert Radnoti. This meet was a chance to see some world-class athletes.”

Walker also proved herself individually breaking the two-year-old record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59:37. She edged out the previous record 1:00.67 which was set in 2007 by then-freshman Taylor Gamble.

Freshman Lauren Lodge also performed impressively. With a time of 4:42.57 in the 1500-meter run she was just shy of beating her personal record of 4:40.03 and placed seventh in a field of 35 runners.

The Waves next meet is the two-day California-Nevada Invitational at UCLA on Saturday and Sunday.
