U.S. — Blackwater USA under the gun from House panel

WASHINGTON, D.C. —The head of Blackwater USA said today that his company was the victim of “a rush to judgment” by a Congressional committee looking into claims that the company’s contract security guards in Iraq have repeatedly been involved in reckless shootings of civilians.

Entertainment — Radiohead lets fans decide what to pay for new album

OXFORD, England — The British band, which has twice been nominated for a best album Grammy, will sidestep the conventional industry machinery altogether Oct. 10 by releasing the album “In Rainbows” as a digital download with no set price. The album will be available only from the band and at radiohead.com, its official site.

Sports — Rockies clinch playoff spot with 13-inning tiebreaker

DENVER — What else would you expect after the most jaw-dropping, elimination-defying win in Rockies history? Four innings after the end of regulation play, the Rockies reversed a two-run deficit to beat the San Diego Padres and make the playoffs. The fans had just witnessed a resurrection.
