The women's volleyball team proves themselves dominant at home in the Asics Classic

September 4, 2010 by Pepperdine Graphic

The Pepperdine women’s volleyball team resumed their ASICS Tournament run in dominant fashion blanking Eastern Washington 3-0 during their morning campaign. Their second straight sweep (25-9 25-13 25-17) improved their set streak to 9 a number that could be competitively challenged in their highly anticipated night cap against the Missouri Tigers.

Junior middle blocker Kim Hill led the way once more delivering an impressive performance en route to her 18th straight game with double-digit kills. Junior outside hitter Lilla Frederick added support with 10 kills of her own. Freshman outside hitter Emily Cook and sophomore middle blocker Victoria Adelhelm combined for 15 kills as well. Junior libero Stevi Robinson moved within 12 digs of the school’s all-time top 10 during the match a mark that could be eclipsed as early as tonight.

The first game started quickly for the Waves as they jumped out to a 12-3 advantage. The early game was highlighted by Hill’s streak of seven straight served points. The second game though not quite as dominant still showcased the versatility of the Waves team and perhaps more importantly just how outmatched Eastern Washington (1-4) was.

The Eagles showed some life in the third game of the match though their flame eventually was extinguished by a ferocious final push by the Lady Waves. Hill’s five kills in the final frame sealed the deal for Pepperdine and paved the way for the must anticipated 7:30 p.m. match.

Pepperdine is now above .500 for the first time this year improving their mark to 3-2. If they want to continue their winning ways they’ll have to get past an undefeated Missouri squad who will probably be their toughest opponent to date.

The final game of the 2010 Asics Classic shows signs of fireworks on paper and it’ll be interesting to see how it turns out. Either way come Sunday morning this Pepperdine women’s volleyball team will know a lot more about where they stand as a team as their young season progresses.
