The Malibu Labor Exchange

November 2, 2006 by Pepperdine Graphic

The Malibu Labor Exchange sits quietly in the middle of paradise. Only minutes away live families sitting in their quiet Malibu mansions. For Dennis Irish, paradise is long forgotten.

“I’m just waiting for the people,” he said.

Center Director, Oscar Mondragon says the center, near the Malibu courthouse parking lot on Civic Center Way, is a great place to help people who are looking for work.

Ishmail Sanchez has been here nine years, trying to earn enough money every day to support his six children and wife.

“We arrive at seven in the morning,” Ishmail says. “If there is work, we will work. If not, we will rest.”

In August 1993, the Labor Exchange was created to help men and women find jobs. More than 5,000 workers are registered under this day labor hiring site.

As cars drive by, the men hope a job offer is on the way.  Getting picked means dinner will be on the table for the men and their families. Until then, they will wait.

If you would like to help the Labor Exchange, call (310) 317-4717.
