October 30, 2008 by Pepperdine Graphic

Pepperdine hosted the Malibu Invitational on Saturday at the Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool where two Waves swimmers led in each of the two sections.

Freshman Rachel Cote scored 37 points finishing first in the 50 butterfly (26.57) 50 backstroke (27.45) 100 back (57.09) and 300 free relay (2:27:31).

Cote’s teammate Danielle Kimmel finished second in the sprint meet. Kimmel earned 28 points with a win in the 50 breast. Haley Wilson finished in third place with a runner-up finish in the 200 IM (2:10.92) and a third place finish in the 100 free (53.44).

In the distance meet Madison Krall scored 23 points to become the Waves’ lead scorer with bronze-medal performances in the 200 fly (2:10.33) and 500 free (5:11.34). Krall also participated in the 400 medley in which her team came in second behind Cote’s team including Kayleen Hicks Francesca Cyhers and Wilson.

The Waves diving team also took hold of the top five spots in the 1- and 3-meter competition.

Freshman Kristin Scribner earned 209.05 points to top the chart. Scribner was followed by her fellow teammates freshman Leslie Wade sophomore Tiffany Martz (190.60) senior Amanda Pond and senior Shannon Hedman (178.00) respectively.

“The upper class did well in the first event of the season but the freshmen really stepped forward in this one winning three events said Pepperdine Head Coach Nick Rodionoff. With more than 500 swimmers there along with a majority of the crowd cheering for us [it] was a great feeling.”

The Waves were one of the seven teams including the men’s and the women’s team from LMU Cal Baptist La Verne Soka University Cal Lutheran and Cal Poly.

The morning sprint meet began at 9:30 a.m. with the 50-yard butterfly. The afternoon distance session started at 2 p.m. with the 200-meter fly. There were a total of 34 races in the invitational along with a diving meet.

“Our goal for the season is to keep improving in meets that will be coming up Rodionoff said.
