Swimmers place fifth at UC Irvine

November 20, 2008 by Pepperdine Graphic

The Waves’ swimming and diving team finished in 5th place last weekend at the UC Irvine Anteater Shootout.

“I think we swam too fast on the first day because we usually compete against better schools on the second day which was unfortunate said Head Coach Nick Rodionoff. But we almost beat Hawaii which is a good showing on our team.”

Freshman Madison Krall set personal records in the 200 and the 1650 freestyle races. She recorded a time of 01:57.24 in the 200 to place 13th. She recorded a total time of 17:43.53 in the 1650 freestyle to finish in 5th place. Krall’s 1650 freestyle time is the fourth fastest recorded in Pepperdine’s history.

Three swimmers recorded personal record times in the 200 butterfly. Senior Michelle Fadley had a time of 2:11.68 and finished in 8th place. Graduate student Adria Stoliar recorded a time of 2:13.69 to finish in 13th. Freshman Martha Murphy came in at 2:30.01 to place 20th.

Freshman Rachel Cote took 3rd place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.03. She also recorded a personal record time of 2:07.57 in the 200 backstroke the fifth best time in Pepperdine’s history tying for seventh in the race.

Junior Dani Kimmel earned a bronze in the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.16. Kimmel’s 2:22.79 in the 200 breaststroke was the second best time in Pepperdine’s history. She also placed 4th in both the 50 free.

Kimmel and Cote were teamed up in the 400 medley relay in which they placed 4th with a time of 3:53.84. Cote timed a 58.68 with a 100-yard back split and Kimmel finished with a breaststroke split of 1:04.32 the third-fastest time recorded in school history.

On the diving portion of the shootout sophomore Tiffany Martz shined both days. She placed 6th on the 1-meter and the 3-meter earning 187.7 points and 189.45 points respectively. Martz continued to improve the next day by earning 207.85 points in the 1-meter and 189.60 points in the 3-meter.

“It is great that our team is setting records individually and that’s how it’s been this season Rodionoff said.

The swimming and diving team will try to set more records at the Nike Cup, which will be held in Long Beach, Calif. from November 20 through 22. This is its last scheduled tournament until Jan. 3, 2009.
