Students trap education in the classroom

February 10, 2011 by Pepperdine Graphic

There’s a certain chill on campus — and we live in Malibu. We’re a place of higher learning and our course catalog shows the wealth of knowledge available to us during our four years on this hillside but for some reason the academic lifestyle fails to seep into student culture here.

Does this sound unfair? Look around you during class. What’s the ratio of engaged students to Facebooking texting doodling or zoning-out students?

How many smiles beam across sleepy heads when classes are canceled? How relieved are we when our classes get out early? How often do students skip class just because? You know the answer to these questions.

And that’s the problem. Students’ continuous drive to avoid class whether physically or mentally shows that students are not here because they value higher education; it’s because they feel like getting a college degree is just the next logical step in their lives after high school.

CORRECTION:

With respect to last week’s staff editorial about Pepperdine’s multicultural graduation event the event is not hosted by the office of Inter-Cultural Affairs.

It is a student-initiated event sanctioned by Pepperdine. Also the gifts will be symbols of cultural unity not different gifts tailored to each individual’s background.
