Spring Recruitment brings new members

While there are no Rho Chis, timed parties or flocks of bright-eyed freshman dressed to the nines, getting to know new people and handing out bids remain.

Spring Recruitment is underway for four Greek organizations: Sigma Phi Epsilon, Alpha Phi, Tri Delta and the newly formed Alpha Tau Omega. Gamma Phi Beta ended their informal recruitment last week with eight new members.

“The girls feel like they don’t have to pay attention to all the things they say or wear,” said Selina Ruiz, who is in charge of Gamma Phi Beta’s recruitment. “It’s a lot more relaxed. It’s not 30 minutes and we hope to know you. We get past the what’s your name, what’s your major. It’s really honest on both sides.”

Alpha Phi President Jackie Chua agrees with Ruiz that spring recruitment allows the sorority to get to know potential new members better.    Typical spring recruitment activities are bowling date dashes, movie nights and broomball games. Bids are usually given out on Friday night or Saturday, Chua said.

“It’s a lot more like the boy’s rush,” Chua said.

Sig Ep President Justin Wilhelm said the pledging period is a little different for the guys doing recruitment in the spring because of Song Fest and Homecoming.

“Fall rush we have stuff planned out everyday,” he said. “Spring Recruitment gets interrupted a lot by events.”

Even though Spring Recruitment is an additional Greek event piled on top of full schedule of events, Chua said that it is time well spent.

“We make sure that we balance ourselves in what we do,” she said. “We make it a point not to over burden our sisters with the schedule. Because they enjoy doing it, it’s not stressful.”

Members of each Greek organization all said they feel like the chapter becomes stronger through having an additional recruitment time.

“We think of informal recruitment as more of a chance for other girls to see our sisterhood,” Ruiz said. “It is an opportunity to grow as sisters and let others know what we are all about. We build sisterhood while sharing it with someone else.”
