Women’s Cross Country
The Pepperdine women’s cross country team finished in eighth place at the 12-team University of California, Riverside Invitational on Saturday.
The event was held at the UC Riverside Farm Course, a five-kilometer course. Senior Katie Clary finished 21st to pace the Waves and sophomore Kyla Maher finished one spot behind her in 22nd.
Clary clocked a time of 18:37.50 while Maher was just behind her with a time of 18:38:60.
California State University, Long Beach won the event with a total team score of 87. Behind them were University of Southern Utah; California State University, Fullerton; Concordia University; California State University, San Jose; Azusa Pacific University and University of Southern California.
The Waves will compete next at the Triton Invitational hosted by University of San Diego on Saturday, Oct. 9.
Mens’s Cross Country
Pepperdine men’s cross country continued to struggle against top competition as the team placed 17th out of 21 teams at the University of California, Riverside Invitational on Saturday.
Pepperdine senior Louis Rich was the Waves’ fastest runner Saturday, finishing in 48th place with a time of 25:49.90.
Freshman Brian Washburn was Pepperdine’s second finisher in a time of 26:32.40.
Cal Coast Track Club took the team title, garnering a total of 90 points, with California State University, Fullerton finishing second, 30 points back of Cal Coast TC.
Pepperdine’s next meet is Saturday, Oct. 9 when the Waves travel to San Diego for the Triton Invitational, hosted by University of San Diego.
Women’s Golf
The Pepperdine women’s golf team continued its strong play against some of the best teams in the nation at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Redmond, Wash.
The ninth-ranked Waves were in second place after the first round of competition at Sahalee Country Club, just two shots behind leader and eventual tournament champion Oklahoma State University.
In the first round, the Waves shot a 10-over par 298, with junior Eileen Vargas leading the way with a 1-over 73, tied for second with two other golfers.
The second day of competition saw the Waves lose ground on their competition after shooting a 316, but the team was still in fourth place after the round, as none of the teams in the tournament broke 300.
Vargas shot a 4-over par 76, putting her in eighth place heading into the final round, six shots behind Oklahoma State’s Karin Sjodin.
In the third and final round of competition, Pepperdine again shot a 316, giving the Waves a fifth-place finish in the tournament, which featured 14 teams.
Vargas finished with a 7-over par 79 to put her in 11th place with a total score of 12-over par. The Waves finished with two players in the top 15, as junior Carolina Llano finished at 13-over par, good enough to be tied for 12th with two other players.
The tournament is the Waves’ second straight in which they had a top five finish. The teams that finished ahead of them were Oklahoma State, University of Oregon, University of Southern California and tournament host University of Washington.
Two of the four teams that finished ahead of Pepperdine are ranked ahead of the Waves by Golfweek Magazine.
The Waves’ next tournament will be the Stanford Pepsi Invitational, held from Friday, Oct. 15 through Sunday, Oct. 17 at the Stanford University Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.
Women’s Tennis
The Pepperdine women’s tennis team showed youth and enthusiasm at the San Diego State University Fall Tennis Classic on Saturday, Oct. 2.
Two of the team’s freshmen, Vanessa Dunlap and Rosette Andreasian, competed at the event and gained valuable experience.
Neither won a match during singles play as they went up against some of the toughest opponents in the nation.
Andreasian, who was swept in her first match by SDSU’s Tina Spaeth, took Tiffany McLaughlin of University of Houston to a tiebreaker in the second game of their match, but ended up falling 6-4, 7-6.
Dunlap and Andreasian teamed up for their doubles match against University of Alabama’s Melissa Day and Maria Muller, a pair of upperclassmen.
Dunlap and Andreasian won three sets off of the Crimson Tide players, but eventually fell 6-3 in their final match of the tournament.
The Waves will next take the court at the ITA Rivera All American Invitational in Pacific Palisades, Calif., in hopes of gaining even more experience during the fall season.
Men’s Tennis
The Pepperdine men’s tennis team began its season at the Icy Hot ITA All-American Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Tuesday.
Doubles partners Pedro Rico and Scott Doerner advanced to the round of 16 by beating University of Miami’s Josh Cohen and Eric Hechtman in the round of 64. They then defeated Middle Tennessee State’s Marco Born and Andreas Silijestrom in the round of 32. Rico and Doerner defeated both opponents by the score of 8-5.
Doerner competed on the first day of singles matches, but fell 6-2, 6-2 to University of Alabama’s Billy Mertz.
Rico, who garnered the eighth seed in the tournament, does not begin singles play until today.
MLB News
Major League Baseball’s post-season began Tuesday with three divisional matchups, starting with the Los Angeles Dodgers taking on the St. Louis Cardinals in St. Louis.
The Cardinals won the matchup 8-3 to take game one of the series. St. Louis hit five homeruns as a team, a playoff record.
In the second game of the day, the Boston Red Sox and Anaheim Angels clashed as Boston’s ace Curt Schilling took the mound against the Angels’ Jarrod Washburn. The Red Sox won the game 9-3 in front of a capcity crowd at Angels Stadium.
The third matchup of the day pitted the Minnesota Twins against the New York Yankees. The Twins’ Johan Santana pitched a shutout, allowing the Twins to win game one, 2-0.
The fourth divisional matchup of Atlanta vs. Houston in the NL, took place yesterday when the Astros’ Roger Clemens went up against the Braves’ Jaret Wright. Houston defeated the Braves 9-3 to gain a one-game lead in the series. Clemens pitched seven strong innings for the Astros.
