Sororities host Yo' night for potential recruits

September 14, 2009 by Pepperdine Graphic

An informal reception at Malibu Yogurt tonight marked the final sorority pre-recruitment event following an orientation and a smoothie night held last week to acquaint potential sorority recruits with Greek life. More than 160 recruits attended the event.

Formal recruitment for the seven Pepperdine sororities begins Wednesday.

The event offered non-Greek women free frozen yogurt as well as a chance to interact with current sorority members before the stress of formal recruitment week

“It lets the girls get an idea of what it’s going to be like said sophomore Harper Matthews, a Gamma Phi Beta sister. The sorority members emphasized the sisterhood, learning, and service parts of being in a Pepperdine sorority.

Also at the event were a group of women classified as Rho Chis. These Greek women volunteer to disaffiliate from their sorority temporarily during the first month of school, in order to shepherd the new recruits through the stressful formal recruitment process. Though these women cannot endorse a specific sorority, they all urge students to try Greek life.

It’s another way to stay involved on campus said senior Rho Chi Lauren Kubiak. It’s a great way to make friends.”

The Rho Chi were also eager to offer advice for rush.

“Be yourself offered senior Rho Chi Sarah Villamaino. Go in with an open mind.”
