SGA holds last meeting of the semester

The final Student Government Association meeting of the semester was packed with exciting new initiatives and sentimental moments.

President Andy Canales opened the meeting with words of reflection.

“It has truly been an honor to serve in this position,” Canales said. “I feel very positive about everything we have accomplished this semester.”

Next week, there will be an SGA banquet at The Cheesecake Factory where this year’s Executive Board will pass down the torch to the 2008-2009 E-Board.

SGA passed a resolution awarding the College Republicans $750 to welcome Dennis Prager, who will be hosting his radio show from the Sandbar on Monday from 9 a.m. to noon.

SGA also approved $2,000 from the philanthropy fund for Sigma Chi’s 12th Annual Run/Walk for Hope, which will take place on Saturday, April 19 at 9 a.m. on the track.

100 percent of the money raised from the event will be donated to The City of Hope cancer research center, which is located in Los Angeles. It will go toward aiding those affected by cancer.

Last semester, Sigma Chi hosted Derby Days to raise money for The City of Hope and earned $10,000. Also, last spring, the 11th Annual Run/Walk for Hope raised $82,000. This semester, they hope to reach $100,000.  The event will be sponsored by Red Bull and New Balance.

There will be many activities and special treats for students, such as a rock climbing wall, free T-shirts, an auction and refreshments for all guests in attendance. Last year’s auction items included autographed basketballs from Jason Kidd, Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson.

Online registration begins Monday at www.runwalkforhelp.com, or individuals can register at the event or Run/Walk tables in the Caf or the CCB.

“Derby Days is our good-old, have fun philanthropy event, but we take the Run/Walk for Hope very seriously,” said Brandon Gassaway, the Public Relations chair for Run/Walk for Hope. “One of our brothers had a mother with cancer, and City of Hope helped her out a lot, so this cause is near and dear to our hearts.”

SGA members are also busy getting ready for Senior Ball, which will be held Saturday, April 19, on a yacht named “Fantasea One” in Marina Del Ray.

Tickets for the event sold out during the first week of sales.

“I’m so excited about this event, it’s going to be fabulous,” said senior Rachel Onojafe, the SGA senator who spearheaded the project.

The meeting ended with a prayer and comment from Danae Merillytou, thanking everyone for their hard work this semester.

The new SGA representatives, voted into office last week, are being integrated into the association.
