Kappa Mu Epsilon, an academic honor society of mathematics which is trying to start a local chapter at Pepperdine, received $200 on Oct. 30 from the Student Government Association’s general fund. The money they received will be spent on a formal dance to encourage involvement in the society among math majors and other students who have completed select math classes.
Kappa Mu Epsilon asked for the same amount of money from the general fund the week before, but the senate did not pass the resolution. On Oct. 30, it passed without debate.
“They were a little more organized,” sophomore representative Jessica Kloor said. “I wanted to make sure that the money went to the right place because a lot of people come to SGA asking for money.”
Kloor also said that the two representatives of Kappa Mu Epsilon who presented the resolution, junior Maura Mahler and sophomore James Keeting, were able to tell the senate exactly where the money would be spent. The first time, the resolution was presented by senior class president Eddie Policastro.
“This time we gave them a more detailed idea of what we wanted to use the money for,” Mauler said.
The formal, Nov. 16 in the Fireside Room, will only be open to math majors or those who have completed enough math courses and their dates. The society expects 25 couples to attend at a cost of $24 each.
Kappa Mu Epsilon is currently being reviewed for affiliation with nationals, but hopes that through this event they can create interest in the math department so that more faculty and classes can be added to the small department, Mahler said.
No other resolutions were discussed at the meeting, even though SGA President Ben Elliott said that the topic of favoritism would be discussed after last week’s discussion between Elliott and Special Events Chair Steve Williams.
After the meeting, SGA members dressed in Halloween costumes divided themselves into groups of three and visited students in their dorm rooms.
