SGA aims to help students find God outside convo

November 13, 2008 by Pepperdine Graphic

Student Government Association will host a convocation on Nov. 19 that will focus on helping students find God outside of convocation. The convo will include a presentation from speaker Tom Shadyac well-known film producer and director and professor of screenwriting at Pepperdine. The celebration chapel student band will also perform at the SGA-hosted convo.

“I’m excited for this convocation to be refreshing and serve as a breath of fresh air that will hopefully inspire students to pursue meaning in their lives Katie Stjernholm, junior class senator, said.

The celebration chapel band will begin by performing songs by popular musical artists, like Leona Lewis, Alicia Keys, Bright Eyes, OneRepublic, and Coldplay, according to Stjernholm.

The convo will continue with a presentation by Tom Shadyac. Shadyac is a professor at Pepperdine who teaches screenwriting, and is also a well-known producer and director. The most recent films he has directed include Bruce Almighty Liar Liar” and “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.”

“We picked Shadyac to speak at this convo because his faith extends into his life and we think he sets a good example with his faith SGA President Hunter Stanfield said. According to Stjernholm, SGA is confident that Shadyac will be able to open students’ eyes to God’s love for humanity and to emphasize the importance of loving one another.

SGA said it hopes all students will be able to appreciate God in all aspects of their lives, even outside of a 40-minute long convocation.

We’re hoping that students can find and connect with God at this convo more than at a regular convo Stanfield said.

SGA encourages all students to attend next week’s convo.

Even if students have all their convo credits done they should come Stjernholm said. It’s going to be an amazing convo.”

Also SGA is at the end of its “Mind and Body Week set to conclude tonight with a coffeehouse that will take place in the Howard A. White Center (HAWC) at 9 p.m. Free coffee and music will be provided.

The theme of the coffeehouse is Ground Yourself which will address unrealistic standards of beauty and self-deprecation.

SGA said they are excited to host the coffeehouse, because they believe it will encourage people to relax and be true to themselves and others, according to Stjernholm.

The musical performers of the night will include juniors Keith Cantu, Shelby Kirk, Alex Cox, Cameron Wheeler, Zack Singerman, Omid Heidari and Michael Brinley.

In addition to the coffee house, SGA passed a resolution Wednesday to put a credit and debit card machine in the Center of Communication and Business’ (CCB) Café Fresca. According to SGA Vice President of Administration John Ceglia, the addition of this credit and debit machine is important because a large amount of the students who have classes in the CCB live off campus and do not have meal plans.
