Pepperdine’s campus is saturated with art. From the flowing fountains to the George Pepperdine statue to the atypical sculptures between Smothers Theatre and the Weisman Museum art has become an innate backdrop to campus life.
One student however is using art on Pepperdine’s campus in an entirely new way. Senior Art major and We Art Aware club President Lindsay Carron is merging her passion for art and Pepperdine’s passion for social justice with her new club this year called We Art Aware.
We Art Aware will utilize art and its creation to raise money and awareness for various social issues.
“The basic premise of the club is to get people’s attention and to really look at the beautiful thing in front of them and realize the greater issue behind it Carron said. Art is something that is often viewed as a luxury… I want art to become a necessary part of the Pepperdine community and for it to make an impact in new areas.”
Carron will be collaborating with friends and outside organizations to put together monthly artistic demonstrations each based around a specific issue. Each demonstration will be different ranging from murals to concerts and perhaps even to body painting.
The club’s first demonstration will take place in early October and will address the issue of HIV/AIDS in the surrounding community. We Art Aware is teaming up with Project Kindle an organization that offers free camps to kids who are affected by HIV/AIDS. For the demonstration in October We Art Aware and kids from Project Kindle will be making a large-scale live art mural on campus.
We Art Aware and Project Kindle will paint the mural publicly over the course of a few days on Pepperdine’s campus both as a demonstration for HIV/AIDS and as a fundraiser for Project Kindle. We Art Aware will also have a table in the cafeteria available with further information about the demonstrations as well as information about donations and how to get involved. Specifically for the upcoming demonstration the club will be selling art made by the kids of Project Kindle.
In addition to local issues Carron plans to team up with international
