Runners prepare for starting line as first Malibu Marathon approaches

November 12, 2009 by Pepperdine Graphic

An expected 1300 runners from around the world will gather to run the inaugural Malibu Marathon on Nov. 15 the first of five yearly races through the city.

The runners are expected to arrive at Zuma Beach from where they will then be bused to the starting lines in Camarillo for the full marathon or Leo Carillo State Beach for the half marathon.

“The majority of the race will be run straight down Pacific Coast Highway volunteer coordinator Allison Clark said.  The coastline cliffs and relatively flat course are attracting a number of world-class marathon runners to this event.”

Numerous Pepperdine-affiliated clubs including Students In Free Enterprise GreenTeam Riptide and women’s tennis are involved with the marathon although not actual participants.

They are mainly in charge of helping with the water stations: helping set up cups pass out water and clean up the coastline— and provide moral support.

“They will hopefully all be wearing shirts and bring banners to let the participants know of the great things Pepperdine students are doing for the Malibu Community Clark said.

The full marathon costs $125 and the half marathon costs $80 for anyone who registered between Aug. 1 and Nov. 15.

Our race is supporting several local charities while being environmentally friendly so the groups like the Green Team and SIFE are really being able to get involved with local community groups like the Malibu Green Machine and Boys and Girls Club while also supporting some of the sustainability initiatives of the clubs Clark said.

Students can register online at malibumarathon.com until Nov. 13 and can use the discount code Run2Paradise” to receive $10 off.

Those not interested in running are still welcome to attend the free Health & Running Expo at Zuma Beach Nov. 13 and 14 where they can get training advice sample goodies and gear discounts.
