Rugby wins again still undefeated

March 28, 2011 by Pepperdine Graphic

The Pepperdine Rugby team continued its undefeated season today with a 43-7 victory over Cal Lutheran in their last home game of the season at Alumni Park. The team is now 6-0 in spring season play and 13-0-1 overall for the year.

After last week’s victory over CSU Fullerton the Waves improved to their first national ranking scraping RugbyMag.com’s Division II ranking at No. 25.

Having defeated Cal Lutheran the Waves move one step closer to reaching the DII Playoffs in San Diego on April 16 and 17 in the hopes of winning their way to the national championship on April 30 in Pittsburgh PA.

Last week the Rugby Club President Ollie Oliver senior said “nothing else matters until we win the next game … so we are taking it one game at a time.”

The Waves next face CSUF again next Saturday April 2 at Fullerton at 1 p.m. and then the following weekend against UCSD in San Diego.

According to junior Garrett Kass the team “has to win one of the two [matches] to be guaranteed the number one seed going into the national tournament, but we’d love to be undefeated.”

Following Fullerton’s 19-20 loss to the Waves they suffered their second season loss this weekend against CSU Long Beach.

“It’ll be interesting to see how they come off that loss to play us [again] Kass said.

Just two matches away from the national tournament, the team seems to have fixed many of the little mistakes Oliver mentioned needed fixing before the Cal Lutheran match.
