Recovery looks promising after head injury

April 13, 2011 by Pepperdine Graphic

Junior men’s tennis player Alex Llompart is in St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica today after falling down a flight of stairs last night at an end-of-season party. Fracturing his skull on the tile and going unconscious teammates called the paramedics.

Llompart arrived at St. John’s with a clot in his brain that was successfully removed by the neurosurgeon according to an email sent out to all Pepperdine athletes this morning. Llompart faces the risk of infection but surgeons are optimistic for a full recovery in following months.

Llompart’s mother arrived to Los Angeles this morning from Puerto Rico and has been in touch with Coach Steinberg and doctors.

Llompart finished the 2011 season with a 27-7 singles record and 21-10 doubles record.

At this point in time the team is not looking to next season but merely focusing on Llompart’s immediate steps to recovery.

Athletics Director Dr. Steve Potts asks that all prayers go out to the Alex Llompart his family and his team.

More will be posted on pepperdine-graphic.com/sports regarding Llompart’s recovery as time and details progress.
