Plans made for elections, Constitution Week events

SPB has organized several events for the upcoming weeks, including those for the “Constitution Week” festivities starting Monday, while SGA will be holding electronic elections for the majority of its elected positions starting Wednesday.

Other upcoming SPB events include a performance by the “Three Comedians” in the Sandbar tomorrow night at 8 p.m. and a concert by Christian pop musician Bebo Norman at 8 p.m. at Smothers Theatre.

In honor of Constitution Week, SPB members will be passing out U.S. Constitutions and Bill of Rights bookmarks in the Waves Caf on Monday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Constitution Week is an annual event commemorating Constitutional law.

On Tuesday SPB will host a table in the Caf at lunch, where students can win prizes for correctly answering questions about the U.S. Constitution. Prizes will be funded by SGA and SPB.

A “running theme” throughout the week, according to Student Activities Coordinator Dustin Vyers, will be the question of how Pepperdine students would re-write the Constitution today.  On Friday, SPB members will be in Joslyn Plaza during lunch, posting students’ “amendment” ideas, to promote student discussion of the Constitution and political issues.

The next major SPB event will be the annual Midnight Madness program on October 13. The student leaders will be responsible for planning the “Village,” which is a street fair held in the Firestone Fieldhouse parking lot prior the opening events.  The “madness” centers around the beginning of NCAA basketball season. Midnight on this night, Varsity players are permitted to begin official practice.  This year will be the 10th anniversary of the event at Pepperdine.  SPB will not be disclosing the theme for the evening or details about the program for several more weeks.

The SGA Executive Board met yesterday with potential candidates from all class levels to discuss the rules and procedures for the upcoming election.  Students will be able to vote for their class senators and for the new “housing” senator positions electronically starting at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, until 8 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 15 through their WaveNet accounts.

Mills and the new Executive board conducted the meeting to try to ensure the election is a success.

“I’m running just to get involved with planning activities, and to get my ideas heard,” said Alex Pennekamp, a candidate for Freshman class President.  “I want to get involved socially, relating to students and getting to talk to people on campus.”

“I am looking forward to getting an elected Senate, and then seeing the results of the initiatives that that Senate puts into action,” Mills said.
