Philanthropy raises money through dance-off

February 17, 2011 by Edgar Hernandez

Pepperdine’s sororities faced off in a dance competition last Thursday Feb. 10 when Psi Upsilon hosted its annual philanthropy “Psi U Think You Can Dance.”

The fraternity raised $3600 all of which will go to the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation. Schmidt is a founding member of Pepperdine’s Lambda Omega Sigma chapter.

In 2000 Schmidt sustained a spinal injury during a practice incident at the Walt Disney World Motor Speedway that left him a quadriplegic. Upon completion of rehabilitation Schmidt created the foundation to help develop cures and effective treatments for paralysis.

The hosts of the event Psi U service chair Mark Allenby and member Caleb Miller also announced that Schmidt is working closely with the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.

Members of the Psi U fraternity kicked off the evening alongside Pepperdine’s dance team followed by the sororities of which Pi Beta Phi went first.

While Delta Gamma won the dance portion the overall winners of the evening were Delta Delta Delta.

DJ Digital Product HighBird and Redbull sponsored the event coordinated by Psi U member Steve Kim.

Last year the winners of the evening were the Delta Gammas while Psi U managed to raise a total of $3000.

The coordinator of the event sophomore Steve Kim said that this philanthropy stands out from others because “It is enjoyable for everybody regardless of Greek affiliation. The fraternity has a direct affiliation with the philanthropy since Schmidt founded Pepperdine’s chapter so it’s more personal.”
