Pepperdine humbles weekend foes on courts

Nothing could stop the Waves this past week. After capturing a historic victory over Baylor last Monday, the No.-2 Pepperdine men’s tennis team dominated Saturday’s matches against Pacific and Princeton, and yesterday’s match against Washington.

Pepperdine picked up a big victory when it overwhelmed the No.-28 Huskies 7-0 yesterday.

Just like the weekend matches, the Waves gained the doubles point, winning all three matches.

The only difference from the weekend matches was that the Waves won every match possible against the Huskies.

After capturing a quick victory over Klaus Jank, Altmann seemed confident with his game. However, he said he wasn’t very satisfied with the performance he had in the singles match.

“I played pretty well in the doubles,” Altmann said, “but didn’t play too well in the singles.”

Still, he managed to dominate his singles competitor 6-2, 6-4.

Adding three home-game wins to its record, Pepperdine remains undefeated at home while clinching a 19-1 record on the campaign.

Pepperdine hosted a doubleheader against Pacific and Princeton at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on Saturday.

During the morning game against Pacific, the Waves quickly picked up the doubles point when the nation’s top-ranked duo senior Scott Doerner and sophomore Andre Begemann easily defeated Jorgen Vestli and Vladimir Zdraykovic 8-2, while the No.-35 pair of seniors Pedro Rico and Ivor Lovrak handled Arnar Sigurdsson and Tim Koniarski 8-4.

In singles, the Waves won five out of six matches and overpowered the Tigers 6-1. Sophomore Oliver Hyams picked up his forth win of the season during his match.

The Waves kept the momentum in the afternoon and picked up its second win of the day when they defeated the Princeton Tigers 6-1.

As usual, Pepperdine won the doubles point as it swept all three matches. The Rico – Lovrak duo topped the Alex Krueger-Wyman and Alex Vuckovic 8-2, while the Doerner – Begemann pair and the duo of freshman Omar Altmann and junor Richard Johnson defeated their competitors 8-5.

Pepperdine again won five out of six singles matches to capture a 6-1 team victory over Princeton.

With Saturday’s wins, the Waves moved to 18-1, while the Pacific Tigers and the Princeton Tigers dropped to 17-1 and 4-5 on the season, respectively.

The Waves will travel to Fort Worth, Texas to play No.-32 Texas Christian University and No.-26 California this weekend.

Although yesterday’s victory over No.-28 Washington was a blowout, it’s never easy to beat any nationally ranked team within top-60, according to Assistant Coach Per Nilsson. This weekend’s opponents are ranked lower than Pepperdine. But there is no guarantee that it will handle them as easily as it did Washington yesterday.

Though Altmann sounded ready for the road trip.

“I’m excited for the weekend,” Altmann said.
