Pepperdine graduate starring on ABC's 'Wipeout'

Rachel Maurer, a 2005 Pepperdine graduate, was chosen as a contestant and competed on ABC’s hit show “Wipeout.” ABC is airing the season premiere of the show tonight, Tuesday, June 21, at 8 p.m. PT, and the summer season premiere airs Thursday, June 23, also at 8 p.m. PT.

“It’s exciting and fun to say that I did it, but if they asked me to do it again I would say no,” Maurer said of the experience.

And who wouldn’t be hesitant to be “wiped out” more than once on national television?

“Getting hit by the pads wasn’t actually that bad because they were really padded,” Maurer said. “But hitting the cold water was definitely painful … I would say that is where most of my bruises came from.”

Maurer was chosen for the show after applying online. She said the chosen contestants were told that nearly 10,000 people applied for a spot on the show.

Because the show is airing tonight, specific details regarding the outcome were not disclosed, although a friend of Maurer’s said that she did win some “gas money,” which is a minor compensation for the minor injuries she sustained.

“My parents pulled a giant wad of mud out of my ear three days later,” Maurer said, laughing.
