Pep rides wave of victory

All in all, October has been a month of victory for the Pepperdine women’s tennis team. Freshman Lise Sissler started the winning streak at the San Diego State University Fall Classic Oct. 7 with a doubles victory.

Junior Karin Schlapbach continued to execute for the Waves when she took tournament champion last Sunday at the Cal State Fullerton Fall Intercollegiate Invitational.

The Pepperdine squad is in its first day of action at the Omni Hotels Regional Championship in San Diego. The four-day event will hopefully be another successful showing for the Waves, who come off an injury-plagued spring season. Sissler, a native of Paris grabbed the Flight B doubles championship with her partner, rookie Alesya Vidov of San Diego State University. She was the only member of the Pepperdine squad who participated in the SDSU tournament.

“Sissler did very well in San Diego,” Head Coach Gualberto Escudero said. “She is a little bit erratic right now. She’ll learn the control to unleash the big forehand and the weapons she has as a player. She has the spirit to fight and a great attitude towards the game of tennis.”

Sissler also clinched a runner-up finish in the Flight C singles championship when she fell to Brianna Krue of Illinois.

While Sissler was representing Pepperdine in San Diego the rest of the team was competing at the Riviera All-American Championships. The Waves were all beat in the first round, except West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year Natalie Braverman. Braverman had to pull out of the consolation finals due to illness. Veteran Schlapbach won six straight matches to finally steal the singles crown at the Titan Tennis Court in Fullerton.
