People & Their Pets: Grant Harling and Jelly Bean

October 2, 2008 by Pepperdine Graphic

Editors Note: The Graphic acknowledges the Smart Car is not actually a pet. However, for some, it functions as such.

So, your car is about the same size as some people’s dogs. How does that make you feel?

Well, I think its cool. I can park in half a spot on campus.

Do you almost consider your car a pet?

Oh sure, why not?

Does your Smart Car have a name?

I haven’t officially named it, but a few of my friends have — Jelly Bean, or Smartie.

Is there any reason they all named it after a candy?

I have no clue … I guess it looks like a little candy.

Okay, so where is Jelly Bean from?

I got him in Texas, but I think he was made in Germany.

Did you drive out here together?

No, we shipped him.

You paid half price, right?

No, I wish. I was like, “Do I get some sort of discount?” No.

Out of the whole litter, how did you choose Jelly Bean?

I do have a regular car, but I just wanted something easier for around campus and in town.

Does Jelly Bean do any cool tricks?

He actually turns into a convertible. He can turn on a dime. He can also park just about anywhere.

Wow, nice training. I know this is a hard question, but which car do you like better?

I love the Smart Car. But, that’s like asking me which kid I like more. I think I like the Smart Car around town more, but if I were going to take a big trip I would take the other one.

Do you think Jelly Bean gets sad when you say things like that?

Yeah, I think he gets a little jealous. I notice he is lonely during the day.

Sad. Okay, but seriously — how many miles per gallon do you get with that little thing?

About 30 mpg in town and traffic, up to 42 on the freeway. It can go up to 90 mph, too. That surprises a lot of people.

Thank you, Grant.
