Off to a record setting pace

After just their second meet of the season, the Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving teams have already produced record-breaking performances.

The Waves hosted meets with Loyola Marymount University as well as the University of Nevada Saturday at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.

Coming into the meet the Waves were expecting to face a tough Reno team.

“We thought it was going to be hard because they are a really good team,” freshman diver Devyn Schumacher said.

After defeating LMU early on Saturday, 191-70, the Waves fell to the University of Nevada, 122-177. The team did not go down without a fight however.

Six of the major events were decided by less than a second.

Maura Bolger took first in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing almost two seconds ahead of second place. Bolger had another outstanding performance as she took second in the 1,000-yard freestyle. This performance earned Bolger a spot on Pepperdine’s all-time fastest list.

The meet was not just about the returning swimmers and divers.

The freshmen pulled their weight and helped out the team immensely while the returning members sat back pleased.

“I am excited because the freshman girls are going to go far this season,” senior Stephanie Hammond said.

Freshman diver Lindsay Stephens took third in the one-meter-diving with a score of 238.15 before taking second in the three-meter-diving with a score of 247.70.

Another young member on the team, sophomore Ketrina Andrews, had a record-breaking meet.

Andrews swam the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 27.95, earning her a spot on Pepperdine’s all-time fastest swimmers charts.

Overall, the women’s swimming and diving teams had an outstanding meet.

The medley “A” team broke into the all-time top five for medley teams.

“I have confidence in the girls,” sophomore Elizabeth Gettings said. “The team is always out to do their best and compete at the best level.

“We have competitive coaching and our freshmen squad is amazing. This means that our team will only get better as the years go by.”

The Waves will compete in the Speedo Cup in Long Beach, from Nov. 20-22.
