Admissions office announces changes in fall registration dates

The admissions office has changed the fall semester registration deadline for returning students to March 21. The date has been moved forward to allow the office time to calculate the number of students who plan to return, and to make sure the correct number of new students are admitted.

Students who do not meet this deadline will have a hold placed on their registration account and may not be allowed to return for studies until spring 2004

“The goal is to ensure a quality experience for all students by carefully managing the college enrollment,” Dean of Admission and Enrollment Management Paul Long said.

Students who have any holds on their account that prevent registration should contact One Stop at ext. 7999 about how to clear them.

Grassroots peace rallies spread across metro L.A.

Local peace activists are borrowing the slogan “War is not the answer” from peace groups in Los Angeles to summarize their stance as they prepare for a Feb. 22 rally in Malibu.

Peace rallies in Hollywood, Santa Monica, San Francisco, New York and other major cities around the country are scheduled for this weekend.

The Hollywood rally starts at 1 p.m. Saturday  at the intersection of Hollywood and Vine and will end at the Armed Forces Recruiting Center at the intersection of Sunset and La Brea. The Topanga Peace Alliance has arranged transportation to the rally from select locations for a fee of $7. Contact the alliance at (310) 455-4341 to make a reservation or for more information.

The rally in Santa Monica, entitled “Peace on the Beach,” is also scheduled for noon Saturday. In addition to an array of drums and speakers, demonstrators will come together in an attempt to form a large human peace symbol on the sand.

Malibu peace activists have scheduled two upcoming events. The Malibu Citizens for Peace will sponsor a rally Sunday at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Webb Way at 2 p.m.

On Feb. 22 various speakers from the community will gather at the Malibu Civic Center at 1 p.m. for more anti-war festivities. Rev. Larry Peacock of the Malibu United Methodist Church will speak about “The Hidden Costs of War and the Things That Make Peace.” In addition, Andrew Beath of the Earthways Foundation will present “Making Geopolitical Decisions from a Place of Wisdom, Not Fear.” The Malibu Citizens for Peace have also arranged music for the event, which is free to all.

Firestone Fieldhouse launches new sound system

A cutting-edge sound system debuted at the Feb. 5 Convocation in Firestone Fieldhouse. A project coordinated by Ed Wheeler of Web & Multimedia Services, it was designed to “provide greater sound clairty and a significantly improved listening experience,” according to a press release.

Some of the enhancements include an array of speakers on the floor and bleacher areas, a maintenance system controlled electronically and an improved digital delay system.

The men’s basketball game against Gonzaga marked the system’s sporting event debut.
