STUDENTS WIN 2003 AMERICAN EAGLE OUTFITTERS SPIRIT OF SERVICE AWARD

Pepperdine students Robin Mastro and Yuriko Castro  have been chosen to receive the 2003 American Eagle Outfitters Spirit of Service Award, which recognizes the students’ commitment to Jumpstart, a national service organization committed to preparing children to succeed in school. They will receive the award at AE’s Santa Monica flagship store.

As the first-ever recipients of this award, the Pepperdine students were chosen from 120 Jumpstart Santa Monica Corps members in the Los Angeles County area.

Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles Barbara Sandoval will present the award to Mastro and Castro who have “exceeded the call of duty by surpassing the yearlong service commitment and demonstrated extraordinary leadership and unwavering professional integrity,” according to a press release from the mayor.

Mastro, an education major, is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children, as shown through her leadership role at two early-learning centers. She was also the first Jumpstart Santa Monica Corps member to surpass the 300-hour Jumpstart commitment.

Castro spent her Spring Break volunteering at an early-learning center and is considered an asset to her team, the children her team serves and Jumpstart. AE commends her for her contagious excitement, a great capacity for leadership and strong perseverance to get the job done.

Mastro said she was honored to be the recipient of such an award.

“Everyone working for Jumpstart deserves this recognition because everyone has worked hard to build this program,” she said in a news release. “It is an honor to represent such an amazing group of people dedicated to serving children and to making a difference in their lives.”
