VICE PRESIDENT GARY HANSON APPOINTS NEW UNIVERSITY RISK MANAGER
Lauren Waldvogel, a Seaver College graduate in journalism, is the new director of Insurance and Risk Management at Pepperdine University.
Vice President and General Counsel Gary Hanson announced the appointment earlier this week.
“Lauren brings to this important post a number of exceptional skills and qualities, including a strong identification with our mission, tested analytical and organizational skills, superior interpersonal skills and a thorough knowledge of the institution,” Hanson said in a news release.
He also announced that Waldvogel will work closely with Associate Vice PresidentPhil Phillips to promote safe practices and conditions for students and employees, and to ensure continued risk identification and minimization for the institution.
Waldvogel has served the university for almost six years within the Advancement and Public Affairs area.
GRAZIADIO SCHOOL SPONSORS BUSINESS ETHICS PILOT PROGRAM
The Graziadio School of Business and Management has initiated a new business ethics certification program for business leaders throughout the Southland.
The school’s highly respected faculty of business experts will lead the program, providing the participating business leaders with the principles, strategies and tools they need to operate businesses within a set of ethical standards.
The pilot program is the first of many GSBM business ethics forums in the coming months, as part of the school’s new multi-faceted initiative called “Business Ethics for the 21st Century.” The intent of this initiative is to provide corporate executives with leadership tools that embrace diversity, trust and social responsibility.

PEPPERDINE COMMUNICATION ASSOCIATION CONDUCTS ALUMNI FOCUS GROUPS
A series of organizational communication focus groups are being sponsored by the Pepperdine Communication Association. Alumni who have graduated with communication degrees from Pepperdine will visit the Center for Communication and Business Friday and Tuesday.
On Friday, the group will concentrate on corporate and consulting communication jobs, including alumni from various consulting and industrial backgrounds.
On Tuesday, athletic coaches, private investigators and newspaper reporters will join alumni of a variety of other professions in discussing various managerial and organizational roles.
Both groups will meet from noon to 2 p.m. in CCB 140.
The purpose of the groups is to examine how alumni have discerned their calling and the role of Pepperdine in their lives. The events will last approximately one hour and will be followed by a question and answer session.
SEAVER COLLEGE ANNOUNCES 2003 AWARDS FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE
Seaver College released the winners of the 2003 Awards for Teaching Excellence on Monday.
The winners were:
Dr. Jeff Banks, visiting professor of business administration
Dr. Dan Caldwell, professor of political science
Dr. Susan Giboney, lecturer of education
Dr. David Gibson, professor of philosophy
Dr. Mike Gose, professor of education
The purpose of these awards is to recognize and reward outstanding teaching at Seaver College. It provides five grants of $2,500 each annually, three to full-time faculty and two to part-time faculty who have exemplified excellence in teaching in the classroom, tutoring and advising.
Alumni who have graduated from Seaver College in the past seven years nominate faculty through the mail. A selection committee, including representatives of the faculty, alumni and students, reviews the nominees and selects five winners.
