Seaver graduate’s miraculous recovery covered by CNN, L.A. Times
In late December, Pepperdine alumnus Ryan Corbin was featured on a Christmas special of “Larry King Live” on CNN and in an Los Angeles Times article about the power of prayer.
Corbin suffered severe brain injuries from a fall he sustained in June 2001. As he lay in a coma, doctors doubted that he would recover even slightly.
His grandfather, entertainer Pat Boone, appeared on “Larry King Live” immediately after his grandson’s accident, pleading for help from viewers in the form of prayer.
During the next 18 months, Corbin showed remarkable signs of improvement, including the ability to talk in whispers. His recovery was revered in the Christian community as strong living proof for the power of prayer.
He appeared with Boone and his mother, Lindy Corbin, on the Dec. 25 episode of “Larry King Live.” Although Ryan could barely verbally communicate, his family expressed gratitude for the support from viewers.
On the same day, the L.A. Times ran an article entitled “Exhibit A for the Power of Prayer,” chronicling Corbin’s long road to recovery.
The article contemplates the healing power of prayer from a medical standpoint and displays God’s perceived plan through the eyes of the Corbin family.
Vice Chancellor Larry Hornbaker remembers legacy
After 33 years of service to the university, Vice Chancellor Larry Hornbaker announced his retirement in December.
On Wednesday, Dec. 4, his last day with the university, Hornbaker reminisced about his accomplishments and experiences at the president’s briefing.
Among the accomplishments he discussed was his role in the transformation of a small college in South-Central Los Angeles into a nationally recognized university. When university officials embarked on the search for a new campus in 1968, Hornbaker played an integral part in raising the $5 million necessary to bring the university to Malibu.
As a key member of the fundraising team that raised more than $600 million in the past 30 years, Hornbaker is responsible for a large portion of the renovation and expansion of the Malibu campus.
