It is no secret that Pepperdine is athletically apathetic. Whether it is women’s volleyball—did you know they won 13 straight games last season?—or men’s basketball—the closest thing we have to a football team—it seems that the only thing that gets people in the door to watch sporting events is free giveaways.
Fortunately for all the latent sports fanatics out there, Pepperdine Athletics is looking to change that this spring with a new campaign known as Wave Zone, a grand opening event to re-brand the student entrance at Firestone Fieldhouse. Wave Zone will be introduced as a pregame launch party at 6 p.m. immediately preceding the men’s January 12th basketball game against LMU at 7 p.m. The event will be held on the pool deck and includes free food, free t-shirts for the first 500 students, ICC club booths, face painting and sign making, games and prizes provided by Nike basketball, and a fan photo contest for a trip to Vegas.
ICC and Pepperdine Athletics are planning to have the Wave Zone at every home athletic event at Firestone Fieldhouse and encourage student groups to host any of their events at the Wave Zone beforehand.
“We really see it as a pre-event hospitality area,” said Katharine Williams, Director of Marketing for Athletics. “We want students to claim this spot as their own.”
The men’s basketball team is currently 7-8 and looking to improve their record to .500 in their first home match-up of the new year against local rival Loyola Marymount. The Lions current record stands at 9-7 after their most recent 79-68 road win over San Diego.
Although this game specifically does not count towards the PCH Cup (not sure what the PCH Cup is? Click here), it will serve as a good preview for future rival match-ups throughout the rest of the spring semester.
The Wave Zone grand opening is sponsored by ICC & Pepperdine Graphic Media, a proud media partner of Wave Zone. The men’s basketball game will be televised on ESPNU.
