Malibu campus to consider even tighter smoking restrictions

May 22, 2012 by Kayla Ferguson

Recent input from the University community indicates that there is interest in further restricting smoking on the Malibu campus, according to a statement issued by the university on Tuesday. The University Management Committee is proposing a revision of the University’s policy that currently allows smoking unless specifically prohibited.

While the input shows that many favor a totally smoke-free campus, others favor incremental restrictions. The proposed changes aim to simplify the policy that feedback shows is currently misunderstood and ultimately further restrict smoking on the Malibu campus. It would prohibit smoking anywhere on campus unless specifically permitted and includes limited, designated smoking areas. Permitted locations will be positioned away from the main thoroughfares yet still provides a variety of locations, which would allow an individual to walk to a designated area and return to his or her residence, place of work, or classroom within roughly fifteen minutes. As of now there are  between seven and 12 designated areas on the lower campus and a few areas on the Drescher campus.

Before the University Management Committee votes on the proposed policy, the university would like to submit it to the community for comment via the following link:
