If you haven’t seen “Tin Cup,” then you don’t know golf in Texas.

The Pepperdine men’s golf team, ranked No. 13 by Golf World, finished in second place Tuesday at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate at the Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas.

The Waves placed second in the 15-team competition. Host team Texas captured the team title with a two-day score of 889, three strokes ahead of Pepperdine.

“(The team) played well,” sophomore Randy Creighton said. “It was definitely not our best tournament. We could have played better.”

Texas Christian claimed third place with 891 overall, while New Mexico came in fourth with 892. No. 15 Oklahoma had 894.

The Waves shot a 290 on Tuesday, the lowest round of the day. No. 12 Texas and No. 8 Texas Christian were four strokes behind with 294 each.

Nine of the 15 teams in the tournament were ranked in the top 25 in the Golfweek poll, which ranks Pepperdine at 23. Two of those teams were in the top 10 — Texas Christian and Oklahoma State.

Creighton finished second in the tournament, shooting a four-under par 212. He shot a 68 on Tuesday, his collegiate best.

“It was fun to go out and play well and see the team play well too,” Creighton said.

Texas’ John Klauk finished first with 210, shooting 70-71-69 in the three rounds.

Oklahoma State’s Hunter Mahan tied for third with Texas Christian’s Adam Rubinson with a two-day total of 214.

Senior Michael Beard tied for fifth place with 217, one-over par.

The Waves next travel to Laredo, Texas, April 5-6 for the Border Olympics at the Laredo Country Club. They will then travel to Tempe, Ariz. for the ASU Thurderbird/Savane Invitational at the Karsten Golf Club April 12-13.

The WCC Championships will be held April 15-16 in Fresno at the Riverbend Golf Club.

“Looking ahead, from a team aspect, (we want to win),” Creighton said. “It’s always good to go out and compete against top teams.”
