Local KTLA news reporter joins Pep PR

Ted Garcia, former KTLA Prime News reporter and Pepperdine alumnus, will join the Pepperdine Public Relations and news team beginning March 10.

Garcia has an extensive broadcast news background as an anchor and reporter, is an Emmy winner, a two-time Emmy nominee and a Golden Mike Award recipient.

“Ted will bring a solid, long-standing tenure to the department,” said Public Relations Director Jerry Derloshon.

Former Associate Director Wileen Wong left Pepperdine after serving five years in the position to accept a position in the Public Relations department at UCLA.

“We value outreach and media relations, and Wileen did a great job of working with the media and of advancing our reputation in print and broadcast,” Derloshon said. “It was not easy saying goodbye.”

After an intense recruitment campaign, Derloshon and his colleagues narrowed the search down to three finalists and eventually asked Garcia to return “home.”

Garcia was a member of the class of 1990 and was very involved with the campus television station as a producer, writer, anchor and reporter during his undergraduate years.

“I basically wanted to do it all, and the faculty and staff gave me an incredible hands-on experience,” Garcia said.

Upon graduation, Garcia remained part of the university as an active alum.

“I’ve always felt that Pepperdine gave me the tools to be successful … It’s my duty to give back,” Garcia said.

The Pepperdine Public Relations Department is looking forward to Garcia’s arrival.

“Ted will help us with reaching new publics and with making progress in new media outreach,” Derloshon said. “We want to continue to compete effectively as a source of news.”
